Ana selling clothes.

Ana (born around 1981) lived in Sanawari. She was a housewife, and her husband worked at a bank. After he was promoted, he was poisoned (presumably out of jealousy). Ana was supposed to marry her husband's brother, but she refused. As a result, all her possessions were confiscated. Her only son died in a car accident in 2013 on his way home from university in Moshi, where he was studying. Since then, Ana has been very lonely and hopeless. The stress caused her to develop high blood pressure, and she had to take medication regularly. She started drinking alcohol. She sold secondhand clothes on the street. She promised to stop drinking if she could get a better business deal. She wanted to continue selling clothes, but on a larger scale, and wanted half a barrel of clothing. Estimated cost (at the time): 600,000 TSh for a full barrel or 300,000 TSh for half a barrel.

Update March 2017: We visited Ana and learned that she had been robbed on New Year's Eve and critically injured with seven stab wounds. The old man who tried to kill her was apprehended by the police; his motive remained unclear. According to our coordinator, it was unlikely he would go to prison for his actions because Ana didn't have a good lawyer. She had to pay a hospital bill of 250,000 TSh. Her relatives pooled their money and covered 50,000 TSh of it, and we covered the rest. Since Ana had stopped drinking, we helped her and bought her half a barrel of clothes.

Update: Ana received her half barrel of clothes and was happy that she could start a new life.

Update January 2018: The man who attacked Ana with a knife was sentenced to 15 years in prison. Ana moved and lived outside of Arusha because she was afraid of the man and continued to fear that his family members might take revenge on her. She often had to attend court hearings, which took time off work and incurred additional travel expenses. As a result, she wasn't making enough profit to buy another half barrel of clothing. Before the trial, her business was doing well, and she had already been able to reinvest her earnings in two new half barrels. We therefore helped her with another half barrel of clothing, thinking that this would allow her to become self-sufficient in the future.

Update January 2018 (later): Ana is managing without our help. The association no longer supports Ana. We wish her all the best for the future.
