Watoto wetu - Our Children

Noela.jpg

Noela

Noela used to go to a private school (Goodwill Primary School). She was ten years old  when her father died in September  2018 and her mum couldn't pay her school fees anymore. The fee of her school is 800,000 TSh per year. Additional costs are similar to the ones of the other children. The total will be around 1,000,000 TSh for one year (about 400 €).

The education in private schools is much better than in governmental schools, however private schools are expensive. Noela seems to be very smart and polite. She speaks good English already. It would be good for her to continue on her current school.

Noela has been sponsored by Grace and Daniel for 2019 and 2020. Her school is paid for 2021 also.

Caren is Maria's daughter. She started school in 2019 in a governmental school. She seems to be clever and luckily Veronika found sponsors for her to continue the second grade in a very good private school in walking distance from her home: Goodwill Primary School. The same group of people also finance her in 2021.

Sponsor Majuma

Mwajuma

Christina's daugther Mwajuma (17) was attending secondary school, but is suspended from school now because her mother was unable to pay the school fee. They are required to pay a debt of 180,000 TSh.

Update: Mwajuma is already back to school, we could pay her school debt. We are looking for a sponsor that can pay her school fees of 200,000 TSh every 6 months.

Update 2018:

Mwajuma is in Form 4 and preparing for the national exams. She is being sponsored by Inge in 2018.

Update February 2019: Mwajuma has not passed all the exams of Form 4 and needs to repeat the year. We are urgently looking for sponsors!

Update 2020: With the support of Katrin, Malte, Sabrina and Maddin, Mwajuma could visit a boarding school to repeat Form 4 and she passed!

Form 5 will begin soon and she needs sponsors to be able to continue.

Update 2021: With the support of Katrin and Malte, Mwajuma has started vocational education at Savanna Bridge College for Hotel management.

Sponsor Daudi

Daudi

Daudi is a 14 year old  boy. He completed primary school in 2015 at Sanawari Primary School and joined Form 1 at Kimandolu Secondary School in 2016. His mother Asha is in financial difficulty and therefore needs financial support for one year expenses to enable Daudi to pursue the studies successfully.

Update:

He lived with his mum, his two sisters and since November 2017 also with the newborn baby of his sister together in a small one-room house and shared a double bed with the whole family. He wanted to go to a boarding school in order to have more privacy and the possibility to focus more on his studies. Ingeborg helped to make Daudi's wish come true. He is now going to boarding school at Uchira since beginning of 2018!

When he returned home during the holidays, he told us that he is very happy there.

Expenses for the first year of secondary school for Daudi

Daudi is fully sponsored by Ingeborg for a boarding school from 2018 until today 2021!

Grace

Daniel

Gerald

Gerald has been seriously sick in 2019. He has been admitted to the hospital a few times because he had a fungus in his brain. His life has never been easy, since he has HIV since birth. Nevertheless he was able to pass the final exams of Form 4 in 2019 and was admitted to Form 5 on a governmental school. As he is living far out of town and there is no school nearby he has to visit a boarding school. The first part of the costs for 2020 are covered (thanks to Erika!), the other parts can be paid later.

Daniel

Alumni

Daniel

Evalin's son Daniel (14) was involved in gangs very early and refused to go to school after Standard 2 (primary school) because his friends told him to come to the street with them. He started stealing and his mother was obligated to pay for it when he was caught. As she could not afford it, she told the elders of her Boma about it and Daniel received the traditional punishment of 70 lashes, until he fainted. After that, he promised never to steal again. He told his mother that if he had the chance, he would like to go back to school again, but in a boarding school far away from his gang. His mother did not succeed in finding a sponsor to enable him to go to a boarding school. Daniel was selling plastic bags on the streets in the city center of Arusha and used to come back in the evenings to sleep at home. He asked us to help him to go to boarding school outside of Arusha. After a long time searching for the right place for Daniel, we finally found it. Daniel is now at Moshi at a center for street boys (Langu la malaika). We visited him together with his mum in February 2017 and all of us are convinced that this is the best thing that could happen to him. He is living with other boys that used to live on the street before, he is gettig food and care and he is going to a special school called for older children who have missed out on schooling in primary schools (Memkwa).

Update: Sadly, Daniel's mother Evaline died in September 2017, Daniel and his brothers and sisters are full orphans now. This was a shock for everyone.

The only positive thing is that Daniel is still in very good hands at Angels gate and Elirehema and the other social workers are taking good care of him.

Benda

Benda

Benda completed primary school with good grades and therefore got the permission to study at the governmental secondary school. However, his mother Christina couldn't afford the school fees and so Benda could not continue. He is now jobless, hopeless and still living with his mother. He would like to get driving lessons and a license to become a daladala, taxi or private driver. After getting the D-class license he can find a job as private driver, and after 6 months of driving private cars, he can get the C-class license which allows him also to drive public cars like taxis and daladalas by paying 40,000 TSh.

Update: Benda already has his driver's license and obtained basic knowledge about how to repair cars during a training at a garage from January until March 2017. When we visited him at the garage in March 2017, he was a completely different person compared to 8 months ago. He became a happy and smiling young man. He is now working with daladalas, mainly as the person who collects money from the passengers. His old boss from the garage will call him when he has work for him to do. Our last wish is to give him his own set of tools for repairing cars.

If you have one at home that you are not using, you can donate it and we will bring it to Tanzania next time.

Update: Benda is not able to update the class of his drivers license, because the law is that he has to wait for 3 years. It is very common to bribe and get it earlier, but as an official registered organization we are not supposed to do that.

Update 2020: Finally, the 3 years are over. In the meantime Benda has done small jobs to survive. In the last year he has been supported by us and visited our English class in Sanawari on a regular basis. Now we paid for his drivers license and he is waiting for the papers (April 2020). We hope he will get it soon and manage to find a job as a driver soon!

Loveness

Loveness

Loveness is 17 year old girl who completed Standard Seven in 2012 and ever since she remained idle at home helping her mother as a fruit vendor.

She went to VETA college to learn English for 3 months and to make a cooking course, which she liked very much. Loveness would like to learn good English. For that, we are looking for volunteer teachers who can teach Loveness and our other children. We made the experience that our children had a better progress when they were taught by volunteer teachers. We have a cooperation with the volunteer hostel Ujamaa, but we also have plans to hire our own English teacher. Loveness was not yet sure about what she wants to become in the future. but after getting counseld by Evance Kessy, one of our local coworkers), she was very sure which is best in accordance with her interests and promising for a good future. She wants to study hotelier management at tropical. The course will take one year. The fee is 900,000 TSh and she will need additional 50,000 TSh for the bus fare and lunch every month.

Loveness has been sponsored through donations from MPIP in Mainz. In December 2018, she has finished her education (foto from her graduation on right side) and in February 2019 she has started a 3 months stage in a luxury hotel in Zanzibar. If she performs well, she might be offered a job there.

Update January 2020: Loveness is taking care of her baby girl. Whenever she is ready to work again, she has good chances to get employed in the luxury hotel in Zanzibar where she did her stage.

Expenses for an Tour guide and wildlife studies course for Hawa

Hawa

Fatuma’s daughter Hawa completed secondary school education in 2015 and now she wants to continue with college education. She is interested in learning English and in getting computer lessons. Later she would like to work in the tourism sector. Her dream is to become a tour guide. Although she was a bit worried because tour guiding in Tanzania is a male domain and she was told that the course will be tough, she decided to fight for her dream and we are sure that she will make it.

Hawa has finished her English course and was sponsored by Veronika and Martin. She is just finishing her drivers lessons and wants to start the course of Tourguiding and Wildlife Studies at Tropical Centre Institute in the middle of April 2017. We will need an additional sponsor to be able to support her with the transport, lunch and additional costs for practical trainings (during the studies, it is required that the students go on trips for practising their tour guiding skills. These trips are not included in the course fees).

Update February 2019: Hawa has finished her education and is now looking for a field work. She needs some more practical experience and most importantly better English.

Update April 2020: Hawa is doing a stage with a small tour company called Glorious Tanzania Tours (https://glorioustanzaniatours.co.tz/). Due to the corona crisis, work in tourism is problematic.

Update April 2021: Hawa can't work for the tour company anymore, as there is no business due to Corona crisis. She is trying to make some money by selling clothes. We could not support her due to lack of funds and issues with our registration (still not completed!).
